First of Many More Days of Walking

September 12
Our first day and it's chilly and overcast; but we're eager to start what we came here to do.
The road out of St. Jean up into the Pyrenees is paved and gets narrower until it is one lane wide.  We often have to step off the road to allow vehicles to pass.  The road is also winding, has a few switchbacks, and is all uphill today, with a couple of especially steep sections.  However, it does pass through beautiful countryside and offers amazing views back down the valley.  The countryside is lush and rural.  There are many herds of white Basque cattle and non-curly-wooled sheep.
For a little while, a gentle, lame black Lab joins us.  And, being the Jenistas we are, we start a cat count.  So far, only one has agreed to accommodate our need for a kitty fix.
About halfway up, it starts to drizzle, then rain in earnest.  So we have the bad fortune--oops! the opportunity--to put our rain gear to use.  Along with the rain, fog rolls in (note the photo Jerri took of me in my rain gear--it's not out of focus; that's the fog obscuring me only a few yards ahead of Jerri).  We're only covering 8 km today, but we wish we were already at Orisson.
