A Hard Day's Night

September 17
Our least favorite spot in the hospital is the ICU waiting room (photo taken after the situation was not so dire).  Despite what the sign says, it is not a room at all, rather a corner in the zigzag of a corridor.

The battered, torn seating is where the chief of the unit suggests we sleep when we arrive late in the evening at Hospital de Navarra with no room for the night.  Exhausted, filthy, and highly stressed already, we choose not to do so.  Instead, we take the short list of nearby, not-too-dear accommodations and walk out into the night in search of a room.  We opt for the lovely complicated version of a room (available for two nights only), requiring three keys.  It is in what I would call an apartment building; the first key opens the door to the entrance vestibule (mailboxes, elevators, etc.).  Each floor has several apartments/pensiones; the second key opens the door to the vestibule and, sometimes, a common lounge.  Along the corridor are the individual rooms; the third key, obviously, unlocks this door.
It is a bit much to absorb after all that has happened, but we take what comfort we can in the cheerful space and private bathroom.
