Around Astorga

October 10
There is quite a bit to see just in the immediate vicinity of our albergue.

The area is known for chocolate and lard cakes (I don't remember the word for them), so there are candy shops and bakeries all over the place.  I did buy a small bar of dark chocolate for us to sample (good, but not the best I've ever had); neither of us had a particular interest in lard cakes.

Practically right outside our albergue door, there is an excavation in progress of an ancient Roman house.  There is some fabulous mosaic work visible.

As we wander the streets, we have a definite Wow! moment.  We turn a corner and at the end of the short street, this bit of some amazing building greets us.

We hurry forward to see the rest and find not one, but two, absolutely fabulous structures--the Palacio Episcopal (the Bishop's Palace) by Gaudí...

...and the Iglesia de Santa Marta (the Cathedral of Saint Martha).

As there are museums and tours, you could spend a day exploring just these two buildings.  We have to be satisfied with admiring them from the outside.
