October 12
The most remarkable thing about Ponferrada (we do not have time for
exploring; apparently there is a fabulous castle) is the parochial albergue we
stay at, San Nicolás de Flüe.
On the grounds of a convent, it is functional yet
inviting. Besides the usual facilities (which are themselves inviting: 4 beds
to a room, abundant shower, bathroom, and laundry access), there is a
library--with 4 pay-as-you-go computers--a covered patio...
...a garden with benches for
enjoying the sun and fresh air...
...and a chapel that is always open.
This is the dome of the chapel.
We attend a prayer service in the chapel before dinner. There are two Spanish
speakers (including the leader), three English, and three Germans. The program
is in several languages so we can all follow along as each group says a part in
its own language. After the prayers, the speaker invites each group to sing a
hymn in their language. I don't recognize the Spanish hymn, but the Germans
sing to the tune of “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee." I have no idea if those
are the words they are singing, but they sound lovely. We sing something in
Latin that I only know because we sang it with the sisters at the singalong a few days earlier.
It is a relaxing, calming little service.
Other than that, I try to draft and send a bunch of blog posts. Even
though WiFi is a big factor in our choice of where to eat each day, we usually do get
good food, too. A plate of fried eggs and potatoes is becoming another favorite.
