October 11
Today's map is measured as 21.4 km, but with a supposedly steep climb
toward the end of the day. However, we encounter relatively smooth terrain...
...although the intermittent rainshowers are annoying (only because it means
getting in and out of rain gear).
The climb itself is gradual, up into the mountains, into the clouds that
obscure the peaks until we are on them.
We reach Rabanal del Camino, the top of the day's map, before 1:00. Over
lunch, we look ahead to the next map. It's 5.8 km to the next town with
accommodations, one of which is a parochial (run by the Church) albergue. We
decide we have that 5.8 km in us.
We do allow ourselves two hours to cover the distance, since it's all
uphill. Some of the trail is rocky, but not too rough nor for too long. It
takes us an hour and a half to arrive in Foncebadón.
Foncebadón can barely be called a village. Most of the buildings are
ruins, but they do manage to have four albergues. We get checked in just before it
starts to rain again--divine timing.
